Cupping Therapy

What is Cupping/Hijama Therapy ?

  • Hijama/Cupping is a method of relieving local congestion by applying cups to create a partial vacuum in the cups, either by heat or by suction. Cupping has been used for thousands of years. Although it is often practiced with Traditional Chinese Medicine, the entire world once knew this treatment method and used it. The Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Chinese used the cupping therapy.
  • 'Hijama' in Arabic is derived from 'hajm' which means 'sucking'. Cupping / Hijama is the process of applying cups to various points on the body and empting the air inside the cups to form a vacuum. It is the most frequently used, oldest and often the most effective method.
  • Dry cupping - This is the process where the cups are placed on the body with suction however the incisions are not made therefore blood is not removed from the skin.
  • Wet cupping (Hijama) -.Bleeding cupping or wet cupping as it is referred to sometimes, is the Sunnah method and is the oldest, most frequently used and often the most effective method of cupping. A surgical instrument is used to pierce the skin and the cup is then applied to collect blood.
  • The cups used in Hijama create a wonderful pulling power that reduces pain and enhances the mobilization of the immune system, stagnated blood and Qi.

Benefits of Cupping Therapy

  • Hijama therapy is effective in treating some clinical manifestations of external pathogens that are fighting at the level of the skin.
  • Hijama treatment releases toxins with minimal additional stress to internal organs and it directly de-acidifies tissues, enhances blood circulation, stimulates the immune system and reduces stress as it releases chemicals from the body that reduce stress and depression.
  • It also facilitates a sufficient flow of nutrition to the affected tissues and stimulates the flow of blood and lymph and so improves blood and lymph flow, and activates the function of the organs. Performing Hijama on the corresponding organ points is used to treat disorders such as liver and kidney problems, respiratory diseases, digestive disorders and some gynecological disorders. It can also be used to treat muscle spasms especially in the back. It is useful in treating painful joints, stomach-ache, vomiting and diarrhea.

Detoxification of the blood, stimulation of new blood formation.

  • As we age, we suffer from increased accumulation of toxins, stemming from poor diet and lifestyle, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals in our fruits, vegetables and meat, environmental pollutants and chemicals. Hijama helps to remove these impurities and stimulate the bone marrow to produce new, healthier blood, increases blood circulation and pain reduction. Areas of chronic pain often have localized areas of blood stagnation. Both the action of drawing a vacuum on the skin as well as the drawing of blood helps to improve circulation. Cupping has been used successfully for numerous diseases including blood disorders, hemophilia, tumors, headaches, paralysis, cardio-vascular, hepatic, renal, genital, rheumatic, and ophthalmic diseases.
  • It is important to have Hijama performed by someone who is trained by a self- regulating-body school. Unfortunately many Hijama practitioners are not well-trained and often perform Hijama incorrectly. Above all, it needs to be done in a clean environment with the practitioner wearing gloves and ensuring everything is kept as sterile as possible. Hijama is very safe, but a patient's medical and medication history is important to consider, which is often neglected by many practitioners.

How does Acupuncture work ?

  • Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health, restoring the balance of our bodily function. Acupuncture treatments relieve symptoms, improve the circulation and immune system, decrease inflammation, relieve pain and relax the muscles of the whole body. Very small and fine sterilised needles are inserted into the acupuncture points just underneath the skin.
  • Acupuncture is said to restore the imbalance of our energy and emotions due to illness, overwork, stress, diet or injuries. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that the balance of our physical health and emotion relies on a smooth flow of energy (Qi) along the meridians throughout both sides of our body from feet and hands to the head. If the energy flow is too slow or too fast, obstructed or blocked, this will create pain, depression and many other chronic or acute symptoms.
  • A more scientific explanation from acupuncture clinical studies shows that the stimulation of acupuncture points on our body can release certain hormones and chemicals that can reduce pain, regulate the endocrine system, and calm the nervous system. Acupuncture regulates serotonin in the brain, with relief of muscle spasms and increased T-cell count which stimulates the immune system. Acupuncture can stimulate nerves which transmit impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary system at the base of our brain.

Treatment with us

  • An acupuncture treatment session with me will be for about 40 to 60 minutes. The first part of the treatment will include a diagnostic interview with patients on how they want my treatment to help their conditions and their concerns on emotions and health, or how they feel after previous treatments. Then, I will start to insert from 2 to 20 very small and fine sterilised needles into acupuncture points in different areas of the body. Most patients report a feeling of `peace’ and `calm’ and a general relaxation during the treatment.

Unani Medicine / Herbal Medicine

  • The Unani System of Medicine originated in Greece (Unan).Hippocrates ( 460 – 377 BC),the “ Father of Medicine” freed medicine from the realm of superstition and magic and gave it the status of science. The teachings of Hippocrates form the basis of the theoretical frame work of Unani Medicine. After Hippocrates, Jalinoos (Galen), Abu Baker Ibn-e- Zakaria Razi (Razer) and Ibn-e- Sina (Avicenna) enriched the Unani System into a complete, systematic form whereby it flourished into a Golden Era.
  • The fundamentals of this system are based on Hippocrates’ Humoral Theory. This presupposes the presence of four humours in the body. According to Unani philosophy the health and illness of a person depends upon the balance of these humours in the body. They are Dam (Blood), Balgham (Phlegm), Safra (Yellow bile), Sauda (Black bile) remain in equilibrium. Every individual at birth is endowed with a unique temperament and this is determined by the presence of all the four humors in different proportions in the body. If the equilibrium of all the four humours is disturbed, disase sets in. Therefore the unani physician adopts different methods to bring back all the four temperaments in equilibrium so as to restore the health of a person.
  • Though, all the different systems of medicine considers “Hippocrates” as the Father of Medicine, the Unani System of Medicine is the only system of medicine still following the principles of medicine laid down by Hippocrates.
